Golf course lakes waterproofed with BASF membranes

Waterproofing membranes by BASF prevent the water in the lakes at Dubai’s luxurious golf courses from draining into the desert.
In Dubai’s desert, not far from the city state’s Gulf coast, a luxurious golf resort comprising four courts that meet the highest requirements of professional tournaments is currently being built. Artificial lakes are scattered throughout the entire complex, all of which required a waterproofing layer at their bottom. The waterproofing was specified to be UV resistant and no tapes or adhesives should be used at all.
In the end, a BASF system solution was selected, consisting of Masterpren® THE 1.5mm and the geotextile SNW 30. Masterpren THE, a thermo-plastic elastomer based on olefine with a fiber-reinforced composite layer, is produced using the coextrusion method. According to the requirements, the seams were not joined using adhesives but machine-welded and afterwards tested using pressurized air. Functioning as base, the SNW 30 geotextile complemented the system solution. In all, 140,000 square meters of Masterpren THE and SNW 30 were placed directly onto the compacted substrate; the edges were fixed along the shores of the lakes. This sealing solution is UV resistant; it does not require any ballast; it also is resistant to both mechanical stress, such as piercing, and to micro-organisms; not least, the lakes could be filled with water immediately – to the absolute satisfaction of the customer.
